Yo Reader! It has been quite the week...I know that I'm only supposed to hit you with one link per email but there's just too much to update you on. So here we go! smoov X Strength Side Back in 2018, I met Josh from Strength Side in a coffee shop. We connected immediately over HUMAN movement. More recently, we connected over the natural process of aging and how fitness culture frames it as a bad thing...like its something you need to prevent or reverse. And we came up with a list of moves that are essential to being a capable human. And we narrowed it down to 5 specific moves in a collab video. You can watch the video here, it was a ton of fun to make and I really think you'll enjoy this one! Speaking of moves that age well, Isometrics! To be completely honest with you, there are days when my body feels disconnected. The hips feel sleepy, the feet and ankles are stiff, the knees are cranky. The shoulders and neck need a rub down. I used to get super overwhelmed and try to do all the mobility training, stretching, foam rolling, you name it. And while all of that stuff is beneficial and has its place, trying to fix myself wasn't what I needed. I just needed to ground into my body and allow the connection to pour in. Isometric holds are this amazing intersection of exercise and stillness that I find incredibly challenging and calming at the same time. Sounds crazy...and the results really are. So I put together this video featuring 3 lower body isometrics, why you want to do them and what to focus on. Give it a watch here, there's a link to the follow along session in the comments if you want 20 minutes of work with me! Primal Flow In Person! Push-ups used to give me a tight neck, painful shoulders and cranky elbows. I could do em, but they broke me down. I remember when I was working a marketing job in tech. Our startup was growing, and so was my waistline. It was't a ton of weight but I noticed it early and wanted to do something about it. I decided that I'd do 5 pushups for every sale that came in. At first, this was 30-50 pushups a day. But that quickly turned into 100-200 a day. I started sweating through my dress shirt but...
Last weekend, I guided a group of men through movement at a retreat. This wasn't a movement retreat, so I was brought in to facilitate a daily 1 hour practice that met the needs of the attendees. Now, the younger me would've tried to prove myself and my approach by putting together hard workouts with challenging and complex movements. But I've been doing this stuff long enough that I know its more about providing practices that are applicable to whoever I'm guiding. These guys were in their...
Here's a secret the big fitness doesn't want you to know....Mobility can be FUN! There's tons of mobility work that brings a scrunchy grimace to your face, like you're trying to open the tightest jar of all time. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but it does instill a belief that improving your movement has to be a grind. That you have to work super hard...and that its not very fun. This is why I love primal movement. It's, in my humble (and experienced) opinion, the most accessible and fun way...
